Cooling systems have existed since the 16th century when water run-off and evaporation were used to reduce air temperature. The Romans used underground tunnels to bring in outside air. This was a true air conditioner, with air entering the house at around 10 to 12 °C in both Winter and Summer, similar to current Canadian wells.
